Zentrum-Südost (Reudnitz)

Zentrum-Südost

Zentrum-Südost (‘centre south-east’) contains the main University of Leipzig campus and the worth-a-visit Leipzig Botanical Garden. The Bayerischer Bahnhof station on the Zentrum-Südost / Zentrum-Süd border is part of a major new underground and S-Bahn rail system created by the completion of the City Tunnel project in late 2013. The area around this station is expected to see a lot growth and development in coming years.

Friedenspark located immediately south of the Botanical Garden is a nice enough place to hang out but lacks the charm of other central parks such as Clara Zetkin park and Johanna park. The Deutsche National Bibliothek with its new modern extension is an impressive facility in Zentrum-Südost. It’s well worth checking out their calendar of exhibitions. The exhibitions and events here can be some of the best you’ll find in Germany. The re-development of Alte-Messe continues unabated and this part of Zentrum-Südost is home to Soccer World (indoor soccer), a large HIT supermarket, Lucky Bike and many others.

The popular area of Reudnitz is sandwiched between Zentrum-Ost and Zentrum-Südost, but if you asked most people they would say Reudnitz was in Zentrum-Südost. Reudnitz is cheap and cheerful with a more studenty vibe than nearby Volkmarsdorf or other parts of the ‘Ost’. The streets around the Ostplatz tram stop (trams 12, 15) are popular with students attending the many university institutes and campuses in the vicinity. Reudnitz is also home to a famous brewery‎ – that’s pretty cool.
