Zentrum-Ost (‘centre east’) or simply the ‘Ost’ is a diverse area which encompasses the Hauptbahnhof and most of the associated railyards. It has many commercial premises and offices situated closer to the Zentrum with mostly residential streets further out. The residential districts of Neustadt, Volksmardorf and Neuschönefeld further to the east are considered to be an extension of Zentrum-Ost. These areas have a relatively high proportion of new immigrants. Leipzigers on low incomes benefit from the cheaper rents in the ‘Ost’.
There are many restaurants (mostly cheaper fast food type), shops and services on the busy Eisenbahnstraße and the streets immediately off this main thoroughfare contain loads of apartments for rent. The tram stop at Hermann-Liebmann / Eisenbahnstraße (trams 1, 3, 8, 13) marks the centre of daily activity. The other busy shopping street in the ‘Ost’ is on the border with Reudnitz around the Reudnitz / Koehlerstraße tram stop on Dresdner Straße (trams 4, 7).
Ludwigstraße and MarianneStraße are two streets in particular that have seen a lot of re-development and renovation in recent years. A small but decent apartment can be rented here German-style for about €185/mth cold rent (‘kaltmiete’). Considering the proximity to the Zentrum this is very good value. We recommend living on the Zentrum-side of Torgauer Platz. While rents are basically the same further east, it’s a bit run down and there’s not as many shops or as much activity.
