Zentrum-Nordwest (Waldstraßeviertel)

Zentrum-Nordwest

Zentrum-Nordwest is a large area encompassing the Leizpig Zoo, Rosental park, Leipziger Auwald, the Leipzig Arena, Red Bull Stadium and the posh mostly residential district of Waldstraßenviertel. Zentrum-Nordwest is bounded by Gohlis to the north, Zentrum-West to the south, the Elster river to the west and Zentrum-Nord to the east.

Leipzig Zoo is totally worth a visit, particularly the indoor Gondwanaland exhibit which is great in the winter (tram 12, Zoo stop). You’ll be surprised by its size and the diversity of animals. Immediately beside the zoo and next to Emil-Fuchs-Straße is the lovely and urban Rosental park. The Leipziger Auwald is the name given to the expansive and mostly forested park that extends to the north and west from the zoo.

Beside Zentrum-West and next to the river you will find the Sportforum which has the Red Bull Stadium (cap. 45,000) where the 2 Bundesliga RB Leipzig football team plays and the Leipzig Arena which is a medium-sized indoor concert venue. Get off at the Sportforum tram stop (trams 3, 7, 8, 13, 15). Note, there is an excellent market with low price clothes and fresh produce in the carpark next to this tram stop every Saturday morning.

Near the Sportforum is the fine district of the Waldstraßenviertel. This district is unique in Germany with many fine examples of Wilheim-era Gründerzeit architecture. The style here is even more ostentatious and imposing than in either the Bachviertel or Musikviertel.
