For years Plagwitz was always the “up and coming” place, but it never quite lived up to the hype. With the latest growth spurt in Leipzig’s population Plagwitz has now definitely gained traction. The area is notably busier and there is a palpable air of energy. New shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. are sprouting like mushrooms on Karl-Heine and Zschochersche Straße, and the streets round about. Nowadays this is definitely THE trendy place to hang out in Leipzig.
The occasional Westbesuch (‘West visit’) street festivals have live music, film, street food, gifts, art shows and sales, and a variety of community-oriented workshops. And big crowds. These events and the associated Westpaket flea market (note: great for second-hand furniture) are perfectly typical of the Plagwitz vibe. The biggest Westbesuch festival has been held around the end of June for about 8 years now. Besides the main summer event there is also an autumnal Westbesuch and a Christmas Westbesuch. This is Plagwitz at it’s best!
The Westbesuch’s are getting busier and busier. In 2014 for the first time the events are “car free”. So if you go, please don’t drive. Bike, walk or take tram 14 to Plagwitz (Karl-Heine) or the S-Bahn to Plagwitz (train S1).
