Things to Do in Winter

Leipzig is all geared up to keep you entertained (and warm) throughout the cold winter months. There’s a ton of things to do whether after work or school, or if you’re just here hanging out a while. Here’s my top 5 winter recommendations.

#5 Go for a sauna

On a cold day why not warm yourself to the core at one of Leipzig’s excellent sauna/spa facilities. The best one is Sachsen-Therme. Indeed one of the best in the country. Take your deep heat therapy in saunas of different temperatures from hot to OK-that’s-ridiculously hot. Try the steam room, hot tubs, and the outdoor pools (yep they’re hot too). Everything is spotlessly clean and organized as you might expect in Germany. A blissful experience guaranteed to cure my winter blues every time.

#4 Leipzig’s Weihnachts Markt

If you fail to find something cheerful about Leipzig’s month-long Weihnachts Markt (Christmas Market) get your heart examined in case it’s made of stone. The friendly crowds, kitschy stalls selling traditional gifts, foods and hot drinks, the sheer overwhelming nostalgia of it all. As December 25 approaches everyone hopes it snows (it often does). It’s dark and cold so enjoy a giant bratwurst and hot Glühwein. Merry Christmas Bah Humbug!

#3 RB Leipzig

Love ’em or hate ’em there’s no denying Leipzig’s record-busting Bundesliga team are a compelling tale. Energy drink-maker Red Bull GmbH purchased local fifth division side SSV Markranstädt in 2009 with the intention of advancing to top-flight Bundesliga within eight years. They did it in seven! Admittedly securing tickets for a home game at the Red Bull Arena can be trickier than getting into Willy Wonka’s factory. Find out the score at the RB Ticket Office.

#2 Gondwanaland

Strip off your winter coat and enter the world’s second largest indoor rainforest in your t-shirt and shorts. This tropical haven covers 1.65 hectares (4.1 acres) containing 300 animals and 17,000 plant species representing the rainforests of three continents. Walk the trails or take a riverboat ride through the steamy jungle whilst forgetting it’s -7c outside! With several nice restaurants and plenty of secluded spots you could spend hours here. Gondwanaland is part of the amazing Leipzig Zoo complex.

Don’t forget your bug spray

#1 Catch a gig

If you thought there was a full-on music scene in Leipzig, wait until you see the winter schedule. Catch a live band (or three) any night of the week. Most indoor gigs are lightly advertised relying on regulars and word of mouth to fill the room. For ideas and advance tickets try TixforGigs or Arena-Ticket for bigger, more mainstream acts. Still not finding anything you fancy? Go directly to the websites of Werk 2, UT Connewitz, naTo or Moritzbaseti. Rock on!

Other ideas:

  • Bike or walk around Cospuden See. Start/finish at the Marina for a hot drink. Try the schnitzels at Wasserwirtsschaft.
  • Get some film culture at DOK in November.
  • Hike up Fockeburg anytime but especially on New Years Eve.
  • Check out events at Leipzig Messe. Dreamhack is must-do for gamers.
  • Catch the horse racing season finale October 28 at Scheibenholz.
