If you’re planning a holiday to Leipzig this Summer you may want to coincide it with my top picks; Bachfest, the Westbesuch’s or one of the race days at Scheibenholz.
Bach Festival / Bachfest – June 10 – 19
The Leipzig Bach Festival generates a great buzz in the city. Hear the works of Bach performed by internationally acclaimed musicians. Even if Bach is not your thing try catching a performance of the St. Thomas’ boys’ choir. There are many free public events. Bars and restaurants stay open late. Only downside is accommodation can become scarce.
Westbesuch – May 14 and August 27
Hip street party and fair in Plagwitz on two separate dates in the summer. Music, street food and art with a chilled out vibe. Look out for the Trödler (flea market) and the Westwerk exhibitions. Take a bike or tram and explore the rest of Plagwitz such as the Karl-Heine Canal or Spinnerei.
Scheibenholz Racecourse – May 1 and 28, August 28, October 15
Leipzig Scheibenholz is located at the southern end of the gorgeous Clara Zetkin park. Four race days in 2016. Hugely enjoyable day out. Bet all day, eat stodgy Saxony food, drink beer and wander around the race grounds. You can get a VIP booth or mix it up with the hoi polloi.
I’ve compiled only a partial list of goings on in Leipzig (basically personal favourites). There’s actually a heck of a lot more happening. I recommend the useful Leipzig City Festivals website for more ideas.
