Schleußig is a central suburb of mostly Altbau apartment living with an outdoorsy middle-class vibe. The area has plenty of spacious 2 and 3-bedroom family-friendly apartments for rent and sale. A bicycle seems to be absolutement de rigueur and residents bike to and from the Zentrum through the wonderful Clara Zetkin park – easily the nicest commute in Leipzig.
Schleußig is self sufficient in shops, restaurants and basic retail and commercial services. There’s a large Konsum supermarket with an adjoining Lukas bakery and coffee shop on the corner of Industriestraße and Könneritzstraße (very popular on a sunny day). Expats from all over Leipzig send their kids to the highly regarded Leipzig International School in Schleußig.
Residents also benefit from being close to the Karl Heine canal on which you can kayak and stroll along. There are some very hip loft apartments beside the canal. Edgy and artsy Plagwitz is next door. Trams (1, 2) glide up and down Könneritzstraße connecting residents to the Zentrum and to the outer suburbs of Lausen and Grünau-Süd. The far southern part of Schleußig has leafy streets of detached homes and low rise modern apartments. If you want a quiet family-oriented area close to downtown put Schleußig on your list.
