Even outside the Zentrum and the four main entertainment areas (the Karli, Gottschedstraße, Karl-Heine, and Münzgasse) the city has a great selection of places to eat or drink. Like most things in Germany, you’ll find the food to be decent quality. This goes even for fast food as well. Coffee, sodas, beer (of course), and other prepared drinks are also very good.
Healthy eating is a major thing in Leipzig. If you are vegan or vegetarian or want organic (‘bio’) you will love the selection of places to eat out. You’ll find vegan and vegetarian menu items in the most surprising of places. Indeed it would be difficult to find a menu in Leipzig that doesn’t offer at least one non-meat or non-dairy option. Even fast food places such as kebab, pizza or hotdog shops will have veggie/cheese, bean, or soy alternatives to their usual fare.
In Connewitz there is a cluster of organic, vegan and vegetarian restaurants and fast food joints. On Wolfgang-Heinze-Straße there’s Deli, Le Cygne, Atacolypse2, and Vegan Lonestar. And on Bornaische Straße you’ll find Braker’s Go and Zest. Our favourite here is Zest, mainly because it turns into a really nice hang out in the evenings.
Check out more detailed reviews of top places to eat. The following map lists more of our favourite spots. Guten Appetit!
Leipzig has a huge vegan/veggie scene. Zest is one of our top recommendations. Excellent food, nice inside space and in the evenings Zest turns into a cool hang out with an awesome drinks selection (alcohol / non-alcohol)
This organic (‘bio’) vegan restaurant on the Karli has some of the most delicious food in town, vegan or otherwise. Don’t be afraid to try this place even if you prefer meat dishes or are out socializing with carnivores
Substanz offers freshly grilled organic burgers and a great wine collection. There's a very nice beer garden where you could happily spend an afternoon. Inside dartboards, table tennis and table football games
Probably the best Indian food you'll find in Leipzig. Not exactly 'Brick Lane' here, but the Vindaloo is actually spicy. The kitchen will oblige if you want things made hotter. Very pleasant inside and outside seating on the Karli
Wait a second, the train station?! Er, well yes. There is an enormous selection of decent restaurants here. They're open long hours and, crucially, all day Sunday as well when many places close in Germany
Cosmopolitan and touristy café in the Zentrum. The Milchbar Pinguin is a throw back to the old GDR times. Specializes in ice creams and desserts and is a wonderful place to hang out on a sunny day. Recommended
Modest order-in or takeaway style restaurant with simple inside seating and outside tables. Quick and friendly service. Food is wholesome and fresh with all the usual offerings such as falafel, halloumi, baba ghanousch, but with a Syrian twist
Best breakfasts on the Karli served until 4pm every day. Hotel Seeblick was way cool before Leipzig got all trendy. Funky 70s GDR decor. Try their excellent pancakes, tapanades, smoothies. Ooooh and those french fries...
American sports bar connected to the Marriott hotel in the city centre. Loads of screens visible from any angle. Decent US-style bar food. Drink prices reasonable. Separate smoking room with its own screen too!
Fantastic "old school" French pastries and local foods served in this historical corner café on the Karli. Try their mid-week lunch specials. Breakfasts are to die for, but you'll need to get there early especially on weekends
In Saxony and Thuringia the grilled bratwurst or simple wurst ('sausage') is practically a religion. Take a pilgrimage to Bread Brothers out on Karl-Heine street in Plagwitz for a modern twist on this local cuisine
With comfy indoor and outdoor spaces the Gosebrauerei is a great place any time of year. Local Gose beer brewed on premises. Hearty Saxon food served til late. Safe bet for a good all-round restaurant / beer garden in Leipzig
Best bagels in Leipzig. Vast selection with fillings or spreads (‘schmears’) and their coffee is a notch above the usual as well. Salads ain’t bad either. They have another branch on the Karli. Open long hours and Sundays
