Münzgasse

Münzgasse (‘coin alley’) is a little street that’s known for eating and less for drinking, although there’s a couple of fun low-key drinking holes. There’s also the trendy upstairs bar at Café Waldi. But generally what you’ll find here is a variety of very good restaurants crammed into one small area.

Münzgasse is tucked away behind the Zentrum end of the Karli (Karl-Liebknecht-Straße) so it’s possible to combine a visit and sample both areas. Take tram 10 or 11 to the Hohe-Straße stop and look for Café Waldi which is situated on a sharp corner separating Münzgasse from the much busier Karl-Liebknecht.

Bring your appetite as there’s a great variety of options on Münzgasse. Almost all have both inside and outside seating. Tuk-Tuk Thaifood is one of Leipzig’s most popular Thai restaurants (another one being Chang over on Gottschedstraße). SuppenBar is as the name suggests a restaurant specializing in soups; gourmet and often quite unusual soups in fact.

Along the tightly packed row of restaurants you’ll find Amor (mostly Italian), Texas Inn (American), Mifune (fine Japanese), and Beirut Night (Lebanese) each of which we have sampled and are worthy of your consideration. There are several others too and a couple of cafes.

Whilst eating is the main activity here, Münzgasse isn’t completely lacking in bars. Münzbar and Absinthe are long-time local favourites and attract a devoted clientele. Overall though expect a slightly older and quieter crowd than on the nearby ‘Karli’.

Bon Appétit.
