Leipzig-Halle airport (Flughafen)

Ryanair has invaded

Since 2011 Ryanair have been using Leipzig-Halle airport. There are rumours that when Berlin Brandenburg International finally opens this low-cost Irish carrier will greatly expand their services at Leipzig-Halle. For now, their London (Stansted)-Leipzig route is very popular.

Other operators at Leipzig-Halle are Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Germanwings, Turkish Airlines and Austrian Air and others mostly charters and seasonal airlines flying to 50+ destinations. Airlines and routes change regularly but the airport certainly seems to be getting busier all the time.

There is an excellent train service between the airport and downtown Leipzig, as well as to Halle and Leipzig Messe. Early in the morning you may need to wait more than one hour for a train into Leipzig. A taxi will cost €40 minimum to the Zentrum to/from the airport. Car parking is plentiful and not too expensive.

If you’re taking the train to the airport we suggest eating or picking up items at Leipzig central train station (Hauptbahnhof) where there’s far more retail and eating options than at the airport.

There are two types of trains between the Hauptbahnhof (‘Hbf’) and the airport (‘Flugh’) – Inter-City (IC) and S-Bahn – and between them there’s service normally every 20-30 minutes. S-Bahn lines S5 and S5X depart the airport twice an hour for the 18 minute trip to Leipzig. IC trains have more infrequent and sporadic timetables. The S-Bahn trains are €4.60 one-way with one stop at Leipzig Messe en route, while IC trains are €6.00 but go direct to the Hauptbahnhof. The cheaper S-Bahn ticket is no good on the IC train and vice versa.

When you arrive at platform 1 at the airport train station to make your journey into Leipzig be aware there are only two ticket machines. This often causes a frustrating queue of recently arrived passengers – there’s one other ticket machine on the opposite platform. Deutsche Bahn have a counter on the concourse on your way to the platform where tickets can also be bought, but it never seems open.

Here’s a handy travel planner for transport to/from Leipzig-Halle airport.
