Kulkwitzer See

The Kulkwitzer See (‘lake’) is a recreational area out in Grünau about 9km west of the Zentrum. There’s a couple of sandy beaches, a water-ski lift, a diveshop, a sauna, boat rentals and a marina, as well as several places to eat around the lake.

The water here is known for it’s clarity and, because the maximum depth is only about 40m, in the summer it gets quite warm.

Our favourite spot for a dip or some sun-bathing is the Strandbad on the west side of the lake, next to the town of Markranstädt. It’s less busy here, parking is slightly better and there’s a great dock for swimming. There’s a nice beach café for snacks and drinks as well.

The biggest and most sandy beach is the one at the main entrance off Seestraße, on the busier Grünau side. There’s lots of shady trees and the most eating and drinking options here too.

It’s possible to walk or bike around the entire lake, the route includes paved path, gravel path and dense forest trails. The lakeside is mostly forested and dotted with access points to the water from rocks and gravelly or soil banks. Some of these secluded spots are popular with nudists. The gravelly beaches near the Delphine Tauschschule (“dive school”) at the south end of the lake are popular with swimmers and families.

It’s pretty easy to get to the Kulkwitzer See. Take trams 1 or 15 (tram 2 goes as far as Grünau-Mitte), or take the S1 S-bahn. Car parking is plentiful, though most of it is paid parking. As usual, biking to/from is a good alternative.
