Karl-Heine

Things are changing so quickly in Plagwitz, and along its most popular street Karl-Heine-Straße (or ‘Boulevard’ if you like), that it’s hard to keep up with it all. It’s even got it’s own blogsite now. The main stretch of Karl-Heine in Plagwitz gets our nod as the hippest place to go out in Leipzig. The occasional Westbesuch Festival held on this street is typical of the vibe here.

It’s easy to get to Karl-Heine-Straße. Take tram 14 or the new S1 S-Bahn line to Plagwitz bahnhof (train station).

Noch Besser Leben (25 Merserburger, enter from Karl-Heine) has long been a feature on the Karl-Heine scene. It was a popular drinking hole, music and stage venue well before Plagwitz was cool. Another long-timer and popular landmark for drinks, food and entertainment is the Schaubuhne Theatre. China Restaurant Peking Haus next door is another long-time Karl-Heine institution that’s been serving up great Chinese food for years.

Bar Seventy is a new-ish addition, but with good music and excellent well-priced food it has quickly become an established hang out. If you seek a beer garden, look for one called Kasierbad, formerly known as Sommergarten Im Westwerk. This is a chilled out place for a drink or have snacks situated next to the Karl-Heine canal. For the best hotdogs in Leipzig (with vegan and veggie options) check out Beard Brothers. La Cantina has gained a solid reputation as a fine Spanish tapas and wine bar.

Rather amazingly, up until only recently is was hard to find a decent cup of Joe on Karl-Heine-Straße. Nowadays there’s several excellent coffee shops with indoor and outdoor seating spilling out onto the sidewalk. Cafe Albert is a good option especially for sitting outside. A few doors down Tacoholics has a cozy inside, good coffee and Mexican snacks, and friendly staff (is that an American-English accent I hear?).

Intersecting Karl-Heine-Straße is Merseburger Straße along which you’ll find süß+salzig (‘sweet and salty’) which has a delicious and varied menu including many veggie options and nothing over €8.90. Also on Merseburger Straße a cozy spot great for watching football (Elias the owner is a Benfica fan) and enjoying a properly good cup of coffee is A Petisqueira.
