Discount Cards

Leipzig Card

Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH (Leipzig City Tourist Office) offers a suite of discount cards for singles and groups called the Leipzig Card.

This is a good deal if you plan to combine traveling on local public transport, with visits to several attractions such as the Leipzig Zoo, museums, Botanical Gardens, go on a guided tour, and eat out at mid to high end restaurants. Go to the main Tourist Office on Katharinenstraße 8 or buy online (see link above).

We suggest you compare your plans with the specific discounts offered. The entrance fee/restaurant discounts are not huge (10-20% range, a few 50%) so unless you plan on lots of these activities, the Leipzig Card probably won’t be worth it.

The serious savings with the Leipzig Card is with using it on the trams, buses and S-bahn. Travel on these are free with the basic card. The Leipzig Regio Card variant also includes free travel on the regional trains.

Sachsen-Ticket / MDV Daycard

If you expect to use local and/or regional public transport a lot you might be better off getting a more specific discount card.

The MDV regional train network offers a one-day Tageskarte (“Day card”) for €6.00 for one person which covers bus, tram, S-bahn, and regional trains for almost the entire Leipzig area. Two persons are €8.00 and so on, up to 5 adults per Tageskarte. Kids are supplement of €2.00 each. This ticket is great for a day of concentrated sightseeing around the city. There are also weekly (“Wochenkarte”) and monthly (“Monatskarte”) variants which are excellent value. Buy at any of the ticket machines you find at train/tram platform stops. Tickets can also be bought at the LVB-Mobilitätszentrum kiosk at Richard-Wagner-Str. (on the main pedestrian pathway between the Hauptbahnhof tram stop and the Zentrum) and the LVB service centre in Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse 8.

The Sachsen-Ticket is a 24 hour ticket perfect for singles or groups planning longer trips from Leipzig. It covers all local trains, the regional transport networks including the Bahn Mitteldeutschland (‘S-Bahn’), as well as almost all buses in Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Saxony.

Prices for Sachsen Tickets are from €22.00 for one adult to €34.00 for five adults if bought from Deutsche Bahn (DB) machine or online. Children and grandchildren under 15 are free. This is the ticket to get if you plan a day trip to Weimar, Dessau, Erfurt, Dresden, etc. Buy it at the DB machines at the ReiseZentrum (‘travel centre’) in Leipzig Hauptbahnhof or go online (see link above).
