The Elster and Pleiße rivers connect the Leipzig New Lakelands (“Neuseenland”) in a north-south direction through central Leipzig. There are several locations in Zentrum-West, Plagwitz and Schleußig where you can rent canoes and kayaks and from here explore these waterways and the Karl-Heine canal.
Prices are all kinda the same everywhere, expect to pay around €35 for daily rental of one-person kayak or €50 for a four-person canoe. You can also rent by the hour. Bookings are advised on summer weekends. The canoe / kayak rental businesses shutdown when it gets below 12c, or when there’s flooding or storms.
We suggest the following watersport shops. Each one is located right next to the water and will rent to you all the equipment needed to canoe or kayak around the rivers and canals in Leipzig (advanced training also offered by some). No special skills are required, you just must be fit enough to paddle and up for a bit of adventure!
The most popular canoe / kayak trips are:
- To Kanal 28 restaurant in Plagwitz on the Karl-Heine canal (easy)
- Down to Cospudener See and back via Elsterflutbett, and Pleiße and Weiße Elster rivers (full-day)
- Circular route around the Weiße Elster and Elsterflutbett
