OK it’s a little bit early, but there’s nothing like thinking ahead to Christmastime to lift your spirit on a gloomy Autumn day.
If you’re going to be around Leipzig this coming festive season you are in for a real treat. We love German Christmas markets and Leipzig’s is one of the best and most atmospheric in all of Germany, if not Europe. People travel from Berlin and other nearby cities and towns to experience it.
Market Square in the Zentrum, and all the streets radiating from here, will be bustling with hundreds of stalls from November 27 to December 23. Glühwein (mulled wine), bratwurst, and hand-made Christmas toys are the traditional items, but there’s also games for the kids, beer drinking, traditional winter foods, musicians and entertainers, parades, and other treats. Not to mention Father Christmas himself makes a special visit to Leipzig. There’s also special gift shopping opportunities should you be so inclined – you will find stalls selling some very well made traditional Christmas decorations.
The arrival of the annual Christmas market invigorates the whole Zentrum and normal shops and restaurants extend their opening hours to cater to the crowds. It really is a very special time in Leipzig.
